Different scans can return different names and versions of the same lost file. Saving every attempt into one directory can overwrite useful candidates and obscure what worked.

What to check first
Assign each attempt its own destination and record the source device, settings, and time. This creates a traceable comparison.
A practical recovery sequence
- Locate and preserve the evidence. Create separate output folders before exporting results, with no destination on the affected source disk.
- Check the most relevant recovery source. Keep scan reports and a small inventory alongside each output. Compare candidates by actual contents and hashes where useful.
- Keep a separate working copy. Build a curated final folder from verified files while retaining uncertain candidates until the recovery review ends.
Keep the recovery attempt reversible
A backup should be evaluated by what you can restore and use. Keep the original backup unchanged while testing a separate restored copy. Record the backup date, selected folders, skipped items, and any missing dependencies. This makes the result reproducible and helps distinguish a copying problem from an already damaged source. For essential data, maintain another independent copy after recovery so that verifying or reorganizing one destination does not put the only usable version at risk.
How to verify the result
Check that duplicate names from different source directories remain distinct and that the selected final versions open correctly.
Record which files you checked and which remain uncertain. Keep unverified candidates separate from files you have confirmed are usable; that distinction matters if someone else needs to continue the work.
The mistake to avoid
Do not deduplicate recovery output solely by filename or delete all smaller candidates automatically.
If files are still missing
For an actual deletion from a stable, accessible local device, Drecov’s data recovery resources provide another starting point. If you choose to evaluate its software, use the Drecov download, confirm support for your device and filesystem, and keep installation and recovered output off the affected storage. Recovery is not guaranteed. Software cannot substitute for missing encryption credentials, cloud permissions, or unreadable hardware.
