Checksums Match but a File Is Still Broken: What That Means

A matching checksum can show that two copies contain the same bytes. It does not establish that the source bytes represented a healthy document or recording.

Checksums Match but a File Is Still Broken: What That Means

What to check first

Separate copy integrity from content validity. If the original was already corrupt, a perfect copy preserves that corruption.

A practical recovery sequence

  1. Locate and preserve the evidence. Retain both the checksum record and the source version used for comparison. Confirm you compared the intended files.
  2. Check the most relevant recovery source. Open the source and copied file in an appropriate trusted application. If both fail identically, look for an earlier known-good version.
  3. Keep a separate working copy. Recover another candidate from backup or version history, then perform both byte-level comparison and content checks as appropriate.

Keep the recovery attempt reversible

A backup should be evaluated by what you can restore and use. Keep the original backup unchanged while testing a separate restored copy. Record the backup date, selected folders, skipped items, and any missing dependencies. This makes the result reproducible and helps distinguish a copying problem from an already damaged source. For essential data, maintain another independent copy after recovery so that verifying or reorganizing one destination does not put the only usable version at risk.

How to verify the result

For documents inspect all sections; for media inspect the full duration. Record which validation each candidate passed.

Record which files you checked and which remain uncertain. Keep unverified candidates separate from files you have confirmed are usable; that distinction matters if someone else needs to continue the work.

The mistake to avoid

Do not describe a checksum match as proof that an archive is usable without testing its contents.

If files are still missing

For an actual deletion from a stable, accessible local device, Drecov’s data recovery resources provide another starting point. If you choose to evaluate its software, use the Drecov download, confirm support for your device and filesystem, and keep installation and recovered output off the affected storage. Recovery is not guaranteed. Software cannot substitute for missing encryption credentials, cloud permissions, or unreadable hardware.
