A Backup Contains Zero-Byte Files: Find Out What Was Actually Saved

A zero-byte file contains no stored payload, even if its name matches an important document. It may reflect a failed export, interrupted copy, or an empty source file.

A Backup Contains Zero-Byte Files: Find Out What Was Actually Saved

What to check first

Compare the backup item with the original and any other retained versions. A backup can faithfully copy an already empty file.

A practical recovery sequence

  1. Locate and preserve the evidence. Preserve the backup set and identify the earliest version with a nonzero size. Record which files and dates are affected.
  2. Check the most relevant recovery source. Check source applications, cloud versions, email attachments, and prior backups for complete copies.
  3. Keep a separate working copy. Restore valid candidates to a new location and investigate the failed backup or export process separately.

Keep the recovery attempt reversible

A backup should be evaluated by what you can restore and use. Keep the original backup unchanged while testing a separate restored copy. Record the backup date, selected folders, skipped items, and any missing dependencies. This makes the result reproducible and helps distinguish a copying problem from an already damaged source. For essential data, maintain another independent copy after recovery so that verifying or reorganizing one destination does not put the only usable version at risk.

How to verify the result

Open every critical candidate and inspect content, since nonzero size alone also does not guarantee validity.

Record which files you checked and which remain uncertain. Keep unverified candidates separate from files you have confirmed are usable; that distinction matters if someone else needs to continue the work.

The mistake to avoid

Do not run a repair tool on a zero-byte copy and expect it to recreate data that is not present in that file.

If files are still missing

For an actual deletion from a stable, accessible local device, Drecov’s data recovery resources provide another starting point. If you choose to evaluate its software, use the Drecov download, confirm support for your device and filesystem, and keep installation and recovered output off the affected storage. Recovery is not guaranteed. Software cannot substitute for missing encryption credentials, cloud permissions, or unreadable hardware.
