Replacing a backup disk can silently drop folders that were stored only on that disk. A backup device sometimes becomes an accidental archive rather than a duplicate.

What to check first
Identify which folders have matching originals elsewhere and which exist only on the old drive. Treat sole copies as primary data.
A practical recovery sequence
- Locate and preserve the evidence. Create an inventory of top-level folders, approximate sizes, and critical file types before starting the migration.
- Check the most relevant recovery source. Copy to a healthy replacement while preserving directory structure. Record errors and retry only the affected items when the source is stable.
- Keep a separate working copy. Compare the new copy with the inventory and keep the old disk unchanged until verification is complete.
Keep the recovery attempt reversible
A backup should be evaluated by what you can restore and use. Keep the original backup unchanged while testing a separate restored copy. Record the backup date, selected folders, skipped items, and any missing dependencies. This makes the result reproducible and helps distinguish a copying problem from an already damaged source. For essential data, maintain another independent copy after recovery so that verifying or reorganizing one destination does not put the only usable version at risk.
How to verify the result
Open examples from every important folder and compare checksums for stable copied files when practical.
Record which files you checked and which remain uncertain. Keep unverified candidates separate from files you have confirmed are usable; that distinction matters if someone else needs to continue the work.
The mistake to avoid
Do not erase the old drive because total used space on the replacement looks similar.
If files are still missing
For an actual deletion from a stable, accessible local device, Drecov’s data recovery resources provide another starting point. If you choose to evaluate its software, use the Drecov download, confirm support for your device and filesystem, and keep installation and recovered output off the affected storage. Recovery is not guaranteed. Software cannot substitute for missing encryption credentials, cloud permissions, or unreadable hardware.
