File History is useful only when the relevant file was included in a completed backup. Seeing other files in the backup does not prove that the missing project was protected at the same time.

What to check first
Check whether the backup predates the loss and whether the original folder was included. Files kept outside the selected locations may have no retained copy.
A practical recovery sequence
- Locate and preserve the evidence. Connect the correct backup drive and browse available backup dates. Look under the original folder name, including any earlier name used before a move.
- Check the most relevant recovery source. Inspect other backup sets or cloud version history if the file's location changed. Preserve any partial or older copy while searching for a newer one.
- Keep a separate working copy. Recover an available candidate to a separate location and label it with its backup date. If there is no copy, assess local recovery only on the disk where the file actually existed.
Keep the recovery attempt reversible
Keep a record of the full path, not just the filename shown in a recent-items list. A file on a network share or in an online-only cloud location is not necessarily stored on your Windows disk. Recovery choices should follow the actual storage location. When a local file was truly deleted, limit further writes to that physical disk while you decide how to recover it. Installing a tool or saving scan results on the affected disk can consume space that previously held deleted data.
How to verify the result
Open the recovered version and compare its contents against the last known edit, not just the date displayed by the restore operation.
Record which files you checked and which remain uncertain. Keep unverified candidates separate from files you have confirmed are usable; that distinction matters if someone else needs to continue the work.
The mistake to avoid
Do not enable File History after the loss and expect it to create versions from before it was configured.
If files are still missing
For an actual deletion from a stable, accessible local device, Drecov’s data recovery resources provide another starting point. If you choose to evaluate its software, use the Drecov download, confirm support for your device and filesystem, and keep installation and recovered output off the affected storage. Recovery is not guaranteed. Software cannot substitute for missing encryption credentials, cloud permissions, or unreadable hardware.
