Why Recovered Files Have New Dates and How to Sort Them

Files restored from a scan may show the date they were recovered instead of the date they were created. This can make a large collection appear to have been produced on the same day.

Why Recovered Files Have New Dates and How to Sort Them

What to check first

Distinguish filesystem timestamps from metadata embedded inside the document or image. Neither should be assumed correct without comparison.

A practical recovery sequence

  1. Locate and preserve the evidence. Preserve the recovery output and scan report before sorting. Work on a second copy if you plan to rename or reorganize many items.
  2. Check the most relevant recovery source. Look for internal dates, document properties, camera metadata, and recognizable content. Group uncertain items separately instead of inventing dates.
  3. Keep a separate working copy. Build a simple inventory with the recovered name, proposed name, evidence, and confidence. Use batches small enough to review before committing a bulk rename.

Keep the recovery attempt reversible

Keep a record of the full path, not just the filename shown in a recent-items list. A file on a network share or in an online-only cloud location is not necessarily stored on your Windows disk. Recovery choices should follow the actual storage location. When a local file was truly deleted, limit further writes to that physical disk while you decide how to recover it. Installing a tool or saving scan results on the affected disk can consume space that previously held deleted data.

How to verify the result

Compare a sample with known originals or email attachments and confirm that the ordering matches the content chronology.

Record which files you checked and which remain uncertain. Keep unverified candidates separate from files you have confirmed are usable; that distinction matters if someone else needs to continue the work.

The mistake to avoid

Do not overwrite all timestamps with an estimated date; preserve uncertainty so later evidence can resolve it.

If files are still missing

For an actual deletion from a stable, accessible local device, Drecov’s data recovery resources provide another starting point. If you choose to evaluate its software, use the Drecov download, confirm support for your device and filesystem, and keep installation and recovered output off the affected storage. Recovery is not guaranteed. Software cannot substitute for missing encryption credentials, cloud permissions, or unreadable hardware.
