When a backup disk is full, it is tempting to delete folders manually to make room. During an active recovery, that can remove the very historical version you are trying to retrieve.

What to check first
Separate the task of restoring existing backups from the task of creating new ones. Identify the backup date that contains the needed files.
A practical recovery sequence
- Locate and preserve the evidence. Avoid starting unnecessary new backup activity while you inspect the required history. Keep the original source and recovery destination distinct.
- Check the most relevant recovery source. Restore priority items to another healthy disk with enough free space. Do not use the backup disk itself as the destination for recovered working files.
- Keep a separate working copy. Once recovery is verified, review future backup capacity and retention through supported backup controls rather than deleting internal backup structures manually.
Keep the recovery attempt reversible
Before changing a volume or library, preserve the original and check an independent backup. A Finder listing, alias, or library preview is not a substitute for opening the underlying file. An external volume may also use encryption or a format that another computer cannot access. Keep any authorized credentials and necessary software available during recovery. If files were actually deleted, minimize use of the source storage; normal application activity can change what remains available to recover.
How to verify the result
Open the restored files and document which backup date supplied them before changing the backup arrangement.
Record which files you checked and which remain uncertain. Keep unverified candidates separate from files you have confirmed are usable; that distinction matters if someone else needs to continue the work.
The mistake to avoid
Do not remove old backup directories by hand based solely on their apparent age or size.
If files are still missing
For an actual deletion from a stable, accessible local device, Drecov’s data recovery resources provide another starting point. If you choose to evaluate its software, use the Drecov download, confirm support for your device and filesystem, and keep installation and recovered output off the affected storage. Recovery is not guaranteed. Software cannot substitute for missing encryption credentials, cloud permissions, or unreadable hardware.
