A practical recovery sequence
- Locate and preserve the evidence. Search your activity records and messages for the folder link. Record the owner and any recent sharing changes.
- Check the most relevant recovery source. Ask the owner to inspect the original location and relevant trash if the folder was deleted. If only access changed, request the appropriate permission through the normal process.
- Keep a separate working copy. After access returns, review critical items and arrange an approved backup process with the owner rather than relying on a shared shortcut.
Keep the recovery attempt reversible
A cloud account is a separate recovery location from the disk in your computer. Account ownership, access permissions, retained versions, and the status of the original upload determine which route is useful. A desktop recovery utility cannot scan remote servers belonging to a cloud provider. Local recovery is relevant only if a complete copy previously existed on accessible local storage. Before resetting a sync client, preserve unsynced work and check which device or service holds the most complete version.

Check that child files have the permissions your team needs; access to a parent folder may not resolve every item-specific issue.
Record which files you checked and which remain uncertain. Keep unverified candidates separate from files you have confirmed are usable; that distinction matters if someone else needs to continue the work.
