An email export may preserve message text without every attachment. The exported format, account configuration, and original download state all affect what was actually saved.

What to check first
Check whether the export is a full mailbox archive, a collection of message files, or a text-only report. A filename mentioned in a message does not prove its bytes are included.
A practical recovery sequence
- Locate and preserve the evidence. Preserve the export and import a copy into a compatible trusted application. Keep the original mailbox separate from any test import.
- Check the most relevant recovery source. Inspect several messages known to contain attachments. If the export lacks them, check the original account, sent mail, local download folder, and recipient copies.
- Keep a separate working copy. Export verified attachments to a new folder with message dates and sender context. Avoid opening executable attachments merely to test recovery.
Keep the recovery attempt reversible
Preserve the current candidate before trying a repair, conversion, or version restore. Application recovery, an earlier saved version, and disk recovery solve different problems: unsaved edits may exist only in application recovery data, while an overwritten cloud document may be available through version history. A disk scanner does not reconstruct edits that were never written to storage. Keep the original filename and source path in your notes so that several similarly named drafts do not become indistinguishable.
How to verify the result
Compare attachment sizes and contents against the message description. Keep message-to-file mapping so duplicate names do not overwrite one another.
Record which files you checked and which remain uncertain. Keep unverified candidates separate from files you have confirmed are usable; that distinction matters if someone else needs to continue the work.
The mistake to avoid
Do not assume that a successful mailbox import means every attachment was recovered.
If files are still missing
For an actual deletion from a stable, accessible local device, Drecov’s data recovery resources provide another starting point. If you choose to evaluate its software, use the Drecov download, confirm support for your device and filesystem, and keep installation and recovered output off the affected storage. Recovery is not guaranteed. Software cannot substitute for missing encryption credentials, cloud permissions, or unreadable hardware.
