A red cross on a mapped drive can mean the server is unreachable, the network changed, or authentication expired. It does not by itself show that the shared files were deleted.

What to check first
Note the network path behind the drive letter. Determine whether coworkers can access the same share and whether a required company VPN is connected.
A practical recovery sequence
- Locate and preserve the evidence. Check your network connection and use the organization's approved access method. Avoid changing server settings from the workstation.
- Check the most relevant recovery source. Open the known share path directly if authorized. If it fails, record the exact error for IT rather than repeatedly entering credentials into unfamiliar prompts.
- Keep a separate working copy. When access returns, copy critical work to an approved backup location if policy permits. If the share is present but files are missing, ask for server-side recovery.
Keep the recovery attempt reversible
Keep a record of the full path, not just the filename shown in a recent-items list. A file on a network share or in an online-only cloud location is not necessarily stored on your Windows disk. Recovery choices should follow the actual storage location. When a local file was truly deleted, limit further writes to that physical disk while you decide how to recover it. Installing a tool or saving scan results on the affected disk can consume space that previously held deleted data.
How to verify the result
Open the files through the restored mapping and confirm that it points to the expected server, not a similarly named replacement share.
Record which files you checked and which remain uncertain. Keep unverified candidates separate from files you have confirmed are usable; that distinction matters if someone else needs to continue the work.
The mistake to avoid
Do not recreate folders in a different share just to make a shortcut appear functional; that can split the team's working data.
If files are still missing
For an actual deletion from a stable, accessible local device, Drecov’s data recovery resources provide another starting point. If you choose to evaluate its software, use the Drecov download, confirm support for your device and filesystem, and keep installation and recovered output off the affected storage. Recovery is not guaranteed. Software cannot substitute for missing encryption credentials, cloud permissions, or unreadable hardware.
