Recover a Folder Deleted From a Network Share

A folder deleted from a shared server may not appear in the Recycle Bin on your workstation. Recovery depends on the server's own backup, snapshot, or recycle settings and on your access permissions.

What to check first

Distinguish a mapped drive from a physically attached disk. A drive letter does not mean that the underlying files live on your computer.

A practical recovery sequence

1. Locate and preserve the evidence. Record the server name, share path, folder name, approximate deletion time, and last known intact version. Send those details to the authorized administrator.
2. Check the most relevant recovery source. Ask the administrator to inspect configured snapshots, server recycle features, and backups. Request restoration to a separate folder when colleagues have continued editing.
3. Keep a separate working copy. Compare the restored folder with current work before merging anything. Coordinate a short pause in editing if replacing shared files is necessary.

Keep the recovery attempt reversible

Keep a record of the full path, not just the filename shown in a recent-items list. A file on a network share or in an online-only cloud location is not necessarily stored on your Windows disk. Recovery choices should follow the actual storage location. When a local file was truly deleted, limit further writes to that physical disk while you decide how to recover it. Installing a tool or saving scan results on the affected disk can consume space that previously held deleted data.

How to verify the result

Check ownership, permissions, representative files, and subfolder counts using an account that normally needs access.

Record which files you checked and which remain uncertain. Keep unverified candidates separate from files you have confirmed are usable; that distinction matters if someone else needs to continue the work.

Do not scan your workstation with recovery software expecting it to recover data stored only on the remote server.
