Mac External Disk Is Visible in Disk Utility but Not Finder

A device listed in Disk Utility may have an unmounted volume, an unsupported format, or a connection problem. Finder visibility alone does not establish whether the data is gone.

Mac External Disk Is Visible in Disk Utility but Not Finder

What to check first

Inspect the device and its volumes separately. Note the displayed capacity, format, and any error without choosing Erase or Partition.

A practical recovery sequence

  1. Locate and preserve the evidence. Check Finder's display settings and try a known-good connection once if the disk is stable. Record whether the expected volume appears in Disk Utility.
  2. Check the most relevant recovery source. If a normal mount attempt fails, preserve the error message and look for an existing backup. Stop if the disk repeatedly disconnects or makes unusual sounds.
  3. Keep a separate working copy. For valuable data without a backup, assess imaging or professional recovery before filesystem repairs. Work from a copy when possible.

Keep the recovery attempt reversible

Before changing a volume or library, preserve the original and check an independent backup. A Finder listing, alias, or library preview is not a substitute for opening the underlying file. An external volume may also use encryption or a format that another computer cannot access. Keep any authorized credentials and necessary software available during recovery. If files were actually deleted, minimize use of the source storage; normal application activity can change what remains available to recover.

How to verify the result

After access is restored, copy priority files elsewhere and open them before considering any repair or reformatting.

Record which files you checked and which remain uncertain. Keep unverified candidates separate from files you have confirmed are usable; that distinction matters if someone else needs to continue the work.

The mistake to avoid

Do not erase the device merely to make it appear in Finder; erasure changes the recovery problem.

If files are still missing

For an actual deletion from a stable, accessible local device, Drecov’s data recovery resources provide another starting point. If you choose to evaluate its software, use the Drecov download, confirm support for your device and filesystem, and keep installation and recovered output off the affected storage. Recovery is not guaranteed. Software cannot substitute for missing encryption credentials, cloud permissions, or unreadable hardware.
