External APFS Disk Will Not Unlock: Preserve Data Before Repair

An encrypted external disk can be detected while its files remain inaccessible until the correct password or recovery method is supplied. This is not the same as an ordinary mount failure.

External APFS Disk Will Not Unlock: Preserve Data Before Repair

What to check first

Record the exact unlock error and verify that you selected the expected volume. Multiple similarly named volumes can cause confusion.

A practical recovery sequence

  1. Locate and preserve the evidence. Check your authorized password records and keyboard layout. Use the documented recovery method available for that disk, if one was configured.
  2. Check the most relevant recovery source. Preserve the disk and any key material while checking backups. If this is a managed device, involve the administrator responsible for encryption.
  3. Keep a separate working copy. If valid credentials are rejected or the disk is unstable, seek qualified help before filesystem changes. Recovery tools do not remove the need for encryption keys.

Keep the recovery attempt reversible

Before changing a volume or library, preserve the original and check an independent backup. A Finder listing, alias, or library preview is not a substitute for opening the underlying file. An external volume may also use encryption or a format that another computer cannot access. Keep any authorized credentials and necessary software available during recovery. If files were actually deleted, minimize use of the source storage; normal application activity can change what remains available to recover.

How to verify the result

After unlocking, copy important files to secure storage and test them before altering encryption or partition settings.

Record which files you checked and which remain uncertain. Keep unverified candidates separate from files you have confirmed are usable; that distinction matters if someone else needs to continue the work.

The mistake to avoid

Do not erase or recreate the encrypted volume to fix access; that does not recover its existing files.

If files are still missing

For an actual deletion from a stable, accessible local device, Drecov’s data recovery resources provide another starting point. If you choose to evaluate its software, use the Drecov download, confirm support for your device and filesystem, and keep installation and recovered output off the affected storage. Recovery is not guaranteed. Software cannot substitute for missing encryption credentials, cloud permissions, or unreadable hardware.
