Dash Cam Event Clips Were Saved in a Different Folder

A dash cam can organize normal recordings and protected event clips differently. A missing clip in the main folder may still be in an event directory, but continued recording can replace unprotected footage.

What to check first

Identify the approximate event time and the camera's folder layout. Check the device clock offset before assuming the correct clip is absent.

A practical recovery sequence

1. Locate and preserve the evidence. Stop using the card and copy its full contents, including event and parking folders, to another disk.
2. Check the most relevant recovery source. Review adjacent clips and all camera channels. Account for file segmentation and a device clock that may differ from local time.
3. Keep a separate working copy. If the needed clip is absent, check whether the card was overwritten and consider recovery only without adding new recordings.

Keep the recovery attempt reversible

Separate the original recording medium, your recovery output, and any edited deliverables. Keep folder relationships and support files when the camera or editor uses them. Thumbnails, proxy videos, and compressed exports can be useful fallback copies, but they should be labeled honestly. Once a recovered original is verified, make an additional independent copy before conversion or editing. This preserves a clean reference if a later export turns out to have missing frames, incorrect color, or reduced resolution.

Play the complete relevant sequence and preserve original files plus metadata. Keep a separate viewing copy if the footage needs to be shared.

Record which files you checked and which remain uncertain. Keep unverified candidates separate from files you have confirmed are usable; that distinction matters if someone else needs to continue the work.
