CSV Looks Empty in Excel: Check the File Before Recovering It

A CSV may appear blank or misaligned when Excel interprets its delimiter or encoding differently from the program that exported it. This is an import problem if the text is still present.

What to check first

Inspect a copy in a plain-text viewer. Visible rows and separators show that the file contains data even when a spreadsheet import presents it badly.

A practical recovery sequence

1. Locate and preserve the evidence. Check file size and preview the first and last lines. A zero-byte file needs a different recovery route from a populated text file.
2. Check the most relevant recovery source. Import the copy with explicit delimiter and encoding choices. Review whether commas, semicolons, or tabs separate fields before accepting the import.
3. Keep a separate working copy. Save the interpreted result as a new workbook while retaining the original CSV. If the export itself was incomplete, re-export from the source system if possible.

Keep the recovery attempt reversible

Preserve the current candidate before trying a repair, conversion, or version restore. Application recovery, an earlier saved version, and disk recovery solve different problems: unsaved edits may exist only in application recovery data, while an overwritten cloud document may be available through version history. A disk scanner does not reconstruct edits that were never written to storage. Keep the original filename and source path in your notes so that several similarly named drafts do not become indistinguishable.

How to verify the result

Compare row counts, accented characters, date columns, and leading zeros in identifiers; a visually tidy table can still contain altered values.

Record which files you checked and which remain uncertain. Keep unverified candidates separate from files you have confirmed are usable; that distinction matters if someone else needs to continue the work.

The mistake to avoid

Do not open and overwrite the only CSV repeatedly while experimenting with import settings.
