Used space on a recorder or memory card can represent other recordings, hidden support files, or an unfinished session. It does not prove that the missing audio is intact.

What to check first
Record the device model, session time, and whether recording stopped normally. Preserve any project folders associated with the session.
A practical recovery sequence
- Locate and preserve the evidence. Stop recording new material and copy all accessible files and folders to another disk. Include sidecar or index files instead of selecting only familiar audio extensions.
- Check the most relevant recovery source. Check the recorder's documented file layout and the application's import view. Search by session date and compare other cards or internal memory if available.
- Keep a separate working copy. If the audio was deleted from removable storage, assess recovery from that medium. Keep recovered output and repair attempts on separate storage.
Keep the recovery attempt reversible
Separate the original recording medium, your recovery output, and any edited deliverables. Keep folder relationships and support files when the camera or editor uses them. Thumbnails, proxy videos, and compressed exports can be useful fallback copies, but they should be labeled honestly. Once a recovered original is verified, make an additional independent copy before conversion or editing. This preserves a clean reference if a later export turns out to have missing frames, incorrect color, or reduced resolution.
How to verify the result
Listen through the complete recording, inspect duration, and check all channels. A waveform preview can conceal silent or missing sections.
Record which files you checked and which remain uncertain. Keep unverified candidates separate from files you have confirmed are usable; that distinction matters if someone else needs to continue the work.
The mistake to avoid
Do not initialize the recorder or delete index files to force it to rebuild the library before preserving the data.
If files are still missing
For an actual deletion from a stable, accessible local device, Drecov’s data recovery resources provide another starting point. If you choose to evaluate its software, use the Drecov download, confirm support for your device and filesystem, and keep installation and recovered output off the affected storage. Recovery is not guaranteed. Software cannot substitute for missing encryption credentials, cloud permissions, or unreadable hardware.
