A ZIP Archive Lists Files but Will Not Extract Them

A ZIP archive can display filenames even when part of its compressed data is missing. The directory listing and the stored file contents are separate pieces of the archive.

What to check first

Check whether the ZIP was fully downloaded or copied and whether it belongs to a multi-part set. An incomplete transfer can mimic corruption.

A practical recovery sequence

1. Locate and preserve the evidence. Copy the archive to a healthy disk and record the extraction error. If there are companion parts, collect all of them under their original names.
2. Check the most relevant recovery source. Test extraction with a trusted archive utility into a new empty folder. Keep successful outputs separate from files reported as damaged.
3. Keep a separate working copy. Obtain another download, sender copy, or backup when possible. If using an archive-repair feature, run it on a duplicate and retain its report.

Keep the recovery attempt reversible

Preserve the current candidate before trying a repair, conversion, or version restore. Application recovery, an earlier saved version, and disk recovery solve different problems: unsaved edits may exist only in application recovery data, while an overwritten cloud document may be available through version history. A disk scanner does not reconstruct edits that were never written to storage. Keep the original filename and source path in your notes so that several similarly named drafts do not become indistinguishable.

How to verify the result

Open extracted files individually, compare expected counts, and check available checksums from the source. A successful partial extraction is not a complete recovery.

Record which files you checked and which remain uncertain. Keep unverified candidates separate from files you have confirmed are usable; that distinction matters if someone else needs to continue the work.

The mistake to avoid

Do not remove the original archive after extracting only some items or rename unrelated files to imitate missing archive parts.
