A browser can report a finished download while your backup still omits files. Large exports, nested folders, shortcuts, and account permissions can all affect the result.
What to check first
Compare the requested scope with the downloaded contents. A single archive may represent only one part of a larger export.
A practical recovery sequence
- Locate and preserve the evidence. Keep the cloud originals in place and inspect every downloaded archive. Check for export reports or skipped-item notices.
- Check the most relevant recovery source. Extract to a healthy disk with enough space and compare folder structure, representative sizes, and expected file types with the source.
- Keep a separate working copy. Download missing items in smaller batches and record which batches were checked. Keep retries separate until you have resolved duplicates.
Keep the recovery attempt reversible
A cloud account is a separate recovery location from the disk in your computer. Account ownership, access permissions, retained versions, and the status of the original upload determine which route is useful. A desktop recovery utility cannot scan remote servers belonging to a cloud provider. Local recovery is relevant only if a complete copy previously existed on accessible local storage. Before resetting a sync client, preserve unsynced work and check which device or service holds the most complete version.
How to verify the result
Open files from several subfolders, especially the largest media and important documents. Confirm that shortcuts were not mistaken for document contents.
Record which files you checked and which remain uncertain. Keep unverified candidates separate from files you have confirmed are usable; that distinction matters if someone else needs to continue the work.
The mistake to avoid
Do not close the cloud account or delete its data just because the browser download bar reached completion.
