Camera File Numbering Restarted: Find Photos Without Overwriting Them

A camera can reuse filenames after a reset or counter rollover. Copying several cards into one folder may then produce replacement prompts for entirely different photos.

What to check first

Compare capture metadata and source card folders. Identical filenames are not enough to identify duplicates.

A practical recovery sequence

1. Locate and preserve the evidence. Create a separate destination directory for each card or session before copying. Keep original filenames until the imports are verified.
2. Check the most relevant recovery source. When a conflict appears, preserve both files and compare image contents, dimensions, and capture time rather than accepting replacement.
3. Keep a separate working copy. Apply a reviewed naming scheme to copies after import, such as session plus original filename. Keep a mapping to the source card.

Keep the recovery attempt reversible

Separate the original recording medium, your recovery output, and any edited deliverables. Keep folder relationships and support files when the camera or editor uses them. Thumbnails, proxy videos, and compressed exports can be useful fallback copies, but they should be labeled honestly. Once a recovered original is verified, make an additional independent copy before conversion or editing. This preserves a clean reference if a later export turns out to have missing frames, incorrect color, or reduced resolution.

How to verify the result

Review files at the conflict points and confirm that photos from both sessions remain accessible.

Record which files you checked and which remain uncertain. Keep unverified candidates separate from files you have confirmed are usable; that distinction matters if someone else needs to continue the work.

Do not select replace-all during import simply because the destination filenames match.
