Camera RAW Files Are Missing but JPEG Copies Remain

A camera may save RAW and JPEG files separately, sometimes to different cards or folders. Finding the JPEG does not prove the RAW was recorded, deleted, or recoverable.

What to check first

Check the capture settings used during the shoot and whether the camera wrote different formats to separate slots. Preserve both cards if available.

A practical recovery sequence

1. Locate and preserve the evidence. Copy the complete card folder structure to healthy storage and search by capture time and filename sequence, including the expected RAW extension.
2. Check the most relevant recovery source. Check editing catalogs, import folders, and backups for RAW originals. A filtered view may show only JPEGs even when both formats exist.
3. Keep a separate working copy. If deletion is likely and the card is stable, consider recovery to another disk using support for the camera's actual RAW format.

Keep the recovery attempt reversible

Separate the original recording medium, your recovery output, and any edited deliverables. Keep folder relationships and support files when the camera or editor uses them. Thumbnails, proxy videos, and compressed exports can be useful fallback copies, but they should be labeled honestly. Once a recovered original is verified, make an additional independent copy before conversion or editing. This preserves a clean reference if a later export turns out to have missing frames, incorrect color, or reduced resolution.

How to verify the result

Open recovered RAW files in a compatible application and inspect full-resolution image data, not just the embedded JPEG preview.

Record which files you checked and which remain uncertain. Keep unverified candidates separate from files you have confirmed are usable; that distinction matters if someone else needs to continue the work.

The mistake to avoid

Do not rename JPEG files with a RAW extension or continue shooting on a card that may contain deleted originals.
