Recover an Earlier Draft When AutoSave Replaced Your Changes

AutoSave can preserve changes quickly, including changes you did not intend to keep. The current file may be intact while an earlier draft contains the content you need.

What to check first

Distinguish an unwanted edit from deletion. Version history, when available for the storage location, is more relevant than undeleting the current file.

A practical recovery sequence

1. Locate and preserve the evidence. Save a separate copy of the current document so that recent useful edits remain available. Note roughly when the unwanted change happened.
2. Check the most relevant recovery source. Browse available versions and compare the affected section. Open a candidate for review before choosing a restore operation that replaces the current version.
3. Keep a separate working copy. Copy the needed passage into a new working draft or restore the appropriate version after coordinating with collaborators.

Keep the recovery attempt reversible

Preserve the current candidate before trying a repair, conversion, or version restore. Application recovery, an earlier saved version, and disk recovery solve different problems: unsaved edits may exist only in application recovery data, while an overwritten cloud document may be available through version history. A disk scanner does not reconstruct edits that were never written to storage. Keep the original filename and source path in your notes so that several similarly named drafts do not become indistinguishable.

How to verify the result

Check the entire document for later changes you still need. Restoring a whole file can remove good edits that occurred after the unwanted one.

Record which files you checked and which remain uncertain. Keep unverified candidates separate from files you have confirmed are usable; that distinction matters if someone else needs to continue the work.

The mistake to avoid

Do not disable sync and create competing copies on several devices without recording which draft should become authoritative.
