Recover the Original Image From a Document or Presentation

The original photo folder may be gone while a document still displays the images. An embedded copy can sometimes provide a usable substitute, though it may be resized or compressed.

What to check first

First determine whether the document contains the image data or merely links to another file. A cached preview may not preserve the original resolution.

1. Locate and preserve the evidence. Save a copy of the document and use the application's image-save or export capability when available. Do not modify the only surviving document.
2. Check the most relevant recovery source. For formats that package assets internally, inspect a duplicate with an appropriate trusted tool. Keep the package structure unchanged in the original.
3. Keep a separate working copy. Compare recovered images with any thumbnails, cloud copies, or collaborator files. Choose the highest-quality complete version and record where it came from.

Keep the recovery attempt reversible

A disk scanner does not reconstruct edits that were never written to storage. Keep the original filename and source path in your notes so that several similarly named drafts do not become indistinguishable.

How to verify the result

Check dimensions, sharpness, color, and cropping. An image extracted from a slide may omit detail that existed in the camera original.

Record which files you checked and which remain uncertain. Keep unverified candidates separate from files you have confirmed are usable; that distinction matters if someone else needs to continue the work.

Do not promise original quality from a document thumbnail or upscale an image and describe it as a recovered original.
