A copied photo library may display previews while some original images cannot be opened or exported. Cloud optimization, referenced files, or an incomplete copy can explain the difference.

What to check first
Determine whether originals were stored inside the library, referenced from another disk, or held in cloud storage. These require different recovery locations.
A practical recovery sequence
- Locate and preserve the evidence. Preserve the library package as a whole and work on a copy. Avoid removing internal files to make the library smaller.
- Check the most relevant recovery source. Check the original disk and authorized cloud account for full-resolution originals. Allow required downloads to complete before making a new archive.
- Keep a separate working copy. Export verified originals to a separate folder or create a complete library backup according to the application's current guidance.
Keep the recovery attempt reversible
Before changing a volume or library, preserve the original and check an independent backup. A Finder listing, alias, or library preview is not a substitute for opening the underlying file. An external volume may also use encryption or a format that another computer cannot access. Keep any authorized credentials and necessary software available during recovery. If files were actually deleted, minimize use of the source storage; normal application activity can change what remains available to recover.
How to verify the result
Open exported images at full resolution and inspect videos beyond their preview frames. Compare counts with the expected collection.
Record which files you checked and which remain uncertain. Keep unverified candidates separate from files you have confirmed are usable; that distinction matters if someone else needs to continue the work.
The mistake to avoid
Do not treat visible thumbnails as evidence that every full-resolution original is safely stored in the copied library.
If files are still missing
For an actual deletion from a stable, accessible local device, Drecov’s data recovery resources provide another starting point. If you choose to evaluate its software, use the Drecov download, confirm support for your device and filesystem, and keep installation and recovered output off the affected storage. Recovery is not guaranteed. Software cannot substitute for missing encryption credentials, cloud permissions, or unreadable hardware.
