A PDF can have a readable opening page while later pages are missing or blank. Recovery may have restored only part of the file, or the application may be having a rendering problem.
What to check first
Use a copy to compare behavior in another trusted PDF reader. Consistent missing pages suggest the problem is in the recovered file rather than a single viewer.
A practical recovery sequence
- Locate and preserve the evidence. Preserve every candidate with a distinct filename. Compare file size, page count, and known section headings without overwriting the best copy.
- Check the most relevant recovery source. Search email attachments, download history, source documents, and backups for another version. If you created the PDF, exporting again from the original may be the most reliable route.
- Keep a separate working copy. Rebuild only from verified pages or source files, and label incomplete versions clearly. Use repair tools on copies because rewriting the PDF can change evidence of damage.
Keep the recovery attempt reversible
Preserve the current candidate before trying a repair, conversion, or version restore. Application recovery, an earlier saved version, and disk recovery solve different problems: unsaved edits may exist only in application recovery data, while an overwritten cloud document may be available through version history. A disk scanner does not reconstruct edits that were never written to storage. Keep the original filename and source path in your notes so that several similarly named drafts do not become indistinguishable.
How to verify the result
Check all pages, selectable text, attachments, and forms. For important documents, compare against an independent copy or the issuing party's version.
Record which files you checked and which remain uncertain. Keep unverified candidates separate from files you have confirmed are usable; that distinction matters if someone else needs to continue the work.
The mistake to avoid
Do not submit an incomplete recovered PDF as a complete record simply because the viewer opens it without an error.
