Time Machine Restored an Older Copy Than Expected

A successful Time Machine restore can still return an older document if the newest changes were not present in the selected backup. Restoration success and version correctness are separate checks.

What to check first

Compare the selected backup time with the editing session and confirm the original file path. A renamed or moved file may appear elsewhere in the history.

A practical recovery sequence

1. Locate and preserve the evidence. Keep the restored version and current candidate under different names. Note the backup date used for each recovered copy.
2. Check the most relevant recovery source. Browse other available backup dates and any earlier folder location. Check application versions or cloud history if the document was synced.
3. Keep a separate working copy. Recover additional candidates for comparison and consolidate the needed content into a new working file.

Keep the recovery attempt reversible

Before changing a volume or library, preserve the original and check an independent backup. A Finder listing, alias, or library preview is not a substitute for opening the underlying file. An external volume may also use encryption or a format that another computer cannot access. Keep any authorized credentials and necessary software available during recovery. If files were actually deleted, minimize use of the source storage; normal application activity can change what remains available to recover.

How to verify the result

Inspect the last edited sections and embedded assets; the file's restoration date does not tell you when its contents were written.

Record which files you checked and which remain uncertain. Keep unverified candidates separate from files you have confirmed are usable; that distinction matters if someone else needs to continue the work.

Do not overwrite a newer working document with an older backup before comparing their contents.
