An Excel Workbook Opens but a Worksheet Is Missing

An Excel file can open normally while a worksheet seems to have disappeared. The sheet may be hidden, the wrong workbook may be open, or a previous save may contain the missing tab.

What to check first

Verify the workbook path and name first. Similar files downloaded from email can make a sheet look missing when you are viewing a different revision.

A practical recovery sequence

1. Locate and preserve the evidence. Inspect the visible sheet tabs and available unhide options. Do not change protection settings or run unfamiliar macros to reveal content.
2. Check the most relevant recovery source. Save a separate copy of the current workbook, then inspect version history or backups for the expected sheet. Compare formulas before copying a sheet between files.
3. Keep a separate working copy. Restore the needed content to a working copy and check references to other worksheets. If the original was overwritten, retain both the older and current versions.

Keep the recovery attempt reversible

Preserve the current candidate before trying a repair, conversion, or version restore. Application recovery, an earlier saved version, and disk recovery solve different problems: unsaved edits may exist only in application recovery data, while an overwritten cloud document may be available through version history. A disk scanner does not reconstruct edits that were never written to storage. Keep the original filename and source path in your notes so that several similarly named drafts do not become indistinguishable.

How to verify the result

Recalculate and inspect key totals, named ranges, charts, and external links; a restored tab can contain broken references.

Record which files you checked and which remain uncertain. Keep unverified candidates separate from files you have confirmed are usable; that distinction matters if someone else needs to continue the work.

Do not assume a missing worksheet requires a disk scan when an intact workbook and earlier versions are still available.
