Word Document Recovery Shows Several Versions: Which Should You Save?

After a crash, Word may offer multiple recovered copies with similar names. The newest timestamp can be useful, but it does not guarantee the most complete content.

Word Document Recovery Shows Several Versions: Which Should You Save?

What to check first

Treat each candidate as evidence of a different save state. A file saved during a problem may be newer yet missing a section that exists in an older copy.

A practical recovery sequence

  1. Locate and preserve the evidence. Save available candidates under separate names before closing the recovery pane. Record which entry each copy came from.
  2. Check the most relevant recovery source. Compare the final paragraphs, tables, comments, and tracked changes. Search for a sentence you remember adding near the end of the editing session.
  3. Keep a separate working copy. Create a consolidated working copy after comparison, keeping the recovered candidates until review is complete. Store that copy in a backed-up location.

Keep the recovery attempt reversible

Preserve the current candidate before trying a repair, conversion, or version restore. Application recovery, an earlier saved version, and disk recovery solve different problems: unsaved edits may exist only in application recovery data, while an overwritten cloud document may be available through version history. A disk scanner does not reconstruct edits that were never written to storage. Keep the original filename and source path in your notes so that several similarly named drafts do not become indistinguishable.

How to verify the result

Close and reopen the final document, review page count and embedded objects, and confirm that comments needed for collaboration remain present.

Record which files you checked and which remain uncertain. Keep unverified candidates separate from files you have confirmed are usable; that distinction matters if someone else needs to continue the work.

The mistake to avoid

Do not dismiss all recovery entries after saving just the first one if you have not compared their contents.

If files are still missing

For an actual deletion from a stable, accessible local device, Drecov’s data recovery resources provide another starting point. If you choose to evaluate its software, use the Drecov download, confirm support for your device and filesystem, and keep installation and recovered output off the affected storage. Recovery is not guaranteed. Software cannot substitute for missing encryption credentials, cloud permissions, or unreadable hardware.
